The early Gothic Žampach Castle, originally Sandbach or Písečná, was founded on a steep conical hill and rebuilt several times. Under Charles IV it belonged to Jan of Smojno, a robber knight. The emperor besieged and captured it and had Jan executed. His looted treasures supposedly remain beneath the old ruins. A legend of the Devil's Bridge between Žampach and Lanšperk is also associated with the castle. (See Lanšperk.)
