Zbudov · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

Kubáta's Stones in the Marshlands

Near the monument to the famous local hero of the Blata marshlands stand two stones in a meadow. At the larger stone supposedly stood the scaffold where Jakub Kubáta, the magistrate of Zbudov, died in 1581. He defended the freedom of the Zbudov marshlands and was beheaded here on Adam of Hradec's orders. As soon as his head sprang from his body, it was supposedly heard clearly calling: 'Farmer Kubáta gave his head for the Blata.' A violent storm then broke, and the terrified nobles fled. The head rolled to the spot marked by the smaller stone, which supposedly possesses magic power. A farmer once dragged it home and used it to pave his yard. Terrible noise erupted at night, and peace returned only when the stone was put back.
