Zachotín · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Ploughing Devil Between the Kladiny Ponds

Near the village are two large ponds called Kladiny, Upper and Lower, separated by a massive embankment. Every night between eleven and midnight, lamentation and rattling chains are heard there. The Devil ploughs with the Rychnov steward harnessed to the plough, driving him with a chain. The steward once had a poor pedlar and his entire family buried in the embankment, superstitiously believing this would stop it bursting. Because of this crime the place remains haunted.
