According to legend, a beautiful maiden, the 'daughter of the earth', once lived here and was loved by the king of the sea, the 'water king'. Longing for her, he dug an underground passage from the sea to the Tatras. Lakes, the 'eyes of the sea', formed wherever he broke through to the surface. Devino pleso supposedly arose from the tears of a girl who mourned her beloved's death here and finally turned to stone.
