The female forest spirit Mařebyla, or Marzebilla, dwells in the surrounding woods. She was supposedly a knight's daughter from a castle called Sonnenberg said to have stood here. In one version, her father ordered her to become a nun, but she fell in love, fled her ancestral castle and preferred to die in poverty. Her ghost has wandered the woods ever since, wearing a metal gauntlet on her left hand. Sometimes she teases woodcutters and begs food from them. On foggy days, the ghost of her husband, a headless rider, also races through the thickets. Another version says the lord of a castle on nearby Jelení hora deprived her of her bridegroom.
