Všetaty · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

A Pagan Hen in a Former Village

East of Všetaty beside the road to Křivoklát lies the site of the former village of Protivná. Pagan ceremonies supposedly continued here even after Christianity was introduced to Bohemia. Pagan priests kept a golden hen with twelve eggs, which they later threw into the local well in a time of danger. Today the well is filled in, and only fragments of masonry recall the old village. Once a century the golden hen appears above ground, clucks three times and vanishes into the filled-in well again. No one has yet caught it. Nearby in the forest is a rise called Na zámečku, where another treasure is supposedly hidden.
