Vodňany · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

Statues in an Abandoned Mine Gallery

Silver was once mined around Vodňany, for example at Svobodné Hory. The ore was roasted in front of the forest at the site where the settlement of Pražák later arose. The people of Vodňany supposedly had twelve statues of apostles cast in silver and placed in the church. In wartime they hid them in an abandoned mine gallery, where they are said still to remain. An underground passage supposedly leads from the cellar of the corner house at the end of Hrnčířská, or Heritesova, Street to Pražák, where the statues are buried.
