Every night a fiery carriage with a headless coachman drove through the forest around the castle, with a dog running behind the team, its tongue aflame. It was the ghost of a wicked castle steward who could find no peace in his grave. He was originally buried in the cemetery at Veverská Bítýška, but three times his grave was found empty and his corpse cast beside the cemetery wall. Finally, he was buried on top of a rock opposite the castle, marked with an iron cross.
