In the Hradec area the guardian of the fields was called Žithola and was said to move so swiftly that he could scarcely be seen. In the Kraslice area his counterpart was the little Grain Man with a three-cornered hat. His task was to watch over the ripening harvest.

What the old legends say
Žithola is primarily a protector of fields, not an attacking ghost. People were expected to treat the harvest respectfully, avoid damaging the ears of grain and not provoke the spirit needlessly. Tradition therefore required no special protective measure.
