It might have been a magnificent residence. According to local legend, devils began building their own castle on Peklo Hill near Větrný Jeníkov. Yet there was a condition familiar from such tales: the work had to end before a rooster crowed. The infernal building site became a race against morning.
A hill with a name that tells a story
The atlas source places Peklo southeast of Větrný Jeníkov, in Zálesí along the road towards Jihlava, and gives its elevation as 699 metres. In the legend, stones are more than stones. Scattered boulders become the remains of a project abandoned at the worst possible moment. The hill’s name, meaning Hell, offers the tale a natural setting.
The devils need the night, the legend says. While their time lasts, they can pile up castle walls and imagine the finished building. But they do not decide when it ends. The rule is simple and relentless: cockcrow means stop. No extra hour, no last exception for an unfinished tower. This very limit is the weakness in their strength.
An early start for market
Before dawn, two local housewives pass by. They are heading to market in Jihlava carrying poultry. They have not set out to drive devils away, nor does the legend turn them into warriors. Their journey belongs to the ordinary world of work and trade. That makes the meeting of the two plots so effective: an everyday morning errand crosses an extraordinary nocturnal construction project.
Then one of the roosters crows. At that moment, the outcome is supposedly settled. The devils must stop and flee their unfinished residence. A plan demanding infernal powers is thwarted by a farmyard voice. The tale needs neither a duel nor a cunning contract. A road to market runs over the hill, and a rooster pays no attention to building plans.
A stone left by an angry builder
According to the legend, the fallen stones remain on the hill as a reminder of the flight. Another motif concerns the little Bláhovska wood: a stone there is said to bear a devil’s hoofprint. One angry devil supposedly wanted revenge on the town but stepped wrong. This too is folklore, not a proven explanation of the stone’s shape. Peklo remains a place where a story gives an ordinary landscape another dimension—and where the last word belongs to a rooster, not a devil.
