The town in the Krušné hory on the German border is one of the centres where mining had already begun in the Middle Ages. It became a royal mining town in 1607. Its name came from Wegberth, or Weypert, the owner of the local hammer mill. During a decline in silver mining, the wind uprooted a tall fir one stormy night, exposing a silver vein beneath it. Part of the town's coat of arms recalls this legend. Mining then resumed, 'a new call was raised', and since then part of the town has borne the name Nové Zvolání, meaning New Proclamation.
