Some legends claim that the castle once housed the Knights Templar. They are credited with building the massive northeastern tower, which contained their chapel, as well as underground cellars and secret passages. One legend says that the Templars lent money to the lord of Buchlov to restore the castle. This happened during the critical period of the order’s dissolution, when Grand Master Jacques de Molay had already been burned in France, and the lord was therefore reluctant to pay. He finally invited the Moravian Templars to a lavish feast, after which he had them all murdered. Historical accounts, however, say that the Templars were not persecuted in this country after the order’s dissolution.
