Many ghost stories surround the castle and nearby hills, inhabited by water nymphs, dwarfs and sprites. In old times, the castle’s subjects had to take turns keeping watch in the tower. One farmer on duty saw an illuminated fairy hall in Karlovský Hill opposite and in Tvarožná Mountain, from which a mysterious murmur arose. A woman once found a little child abandoned in the woods in winter and took it home. Later a voice outside called, “Hilar, Hilar,” and the child rose and fled. It was supposedly a sprite from the fairy hall called Hilar. It should be noted that the local patron saint and protector is St Hilary.
