Sovinec was once a mighty, impregnable castle. In the village below stood seven houses linked to it by secret passages. Food and ammunition reached the besieged garrison this way. The houses were called the “seven guardians,” or in German “die sieben Kurfürsten,” the seven electors. After a local blacksmith revealed them and a long siege in 1643, the castle’s defenders surrendered to the Swedes.
