In the eighteenth century, under Albert of Hodic, life here was lively. In 1758 Frederick II of Prussia visited the chateau, accompanied by Voltaire. There were interesting mineral collections, a rich library, and some four thousand different water features and romantic buildings in the park. The chateau also contained many curiosities, trapdoors and secret doors. Human chess was among the games played here. Only scant remains of this bizarre world survive today.
