The Lady and Child in the Bell

The local church has a bell bearing one of the oldest known Czech inscriptions, dated 1386. It is said that the lord of Smečno Château ordered it from the hermit bell-founder Petr. The lady of Smečno came with her son to watch him work and, despite warnings, approached the casting ladle. Overcome by the fumes, she fell with her son into the molten bell metal.
