According to legend, a miracle occurred around 1500 beside a cross on Ostaš Hill. A girl blind from birth regained her sight while praying there. Famous pilgrimages later came to the site, accompanied by Passion plays. As at Wambierzyce in the Kłodzko region, a man dressed as Christ left the church in a procession, dragging a heavy cross. He had to carry it for more than four kilometres, breaking the journey at prescribed stations. Four guards walked beside him, charged with whipping Christ. Ten other men helped carry the cross. Behind them walked twelve white-clad flagellants, penitently scourging themselves until they bled. An immense crowd of spectators brought up the rear and then watched the crucifixion of Christ on Ostaš, much as at the famous Passion plays in Ammergau. The plays were last held in 1771.
