Segner’s Wheel and the Alchemists

The Gothic house at no. 7 on today’s Michalská Street is called Segnerova kúria, named after the renowned physicist who lived and died here. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it supposedly housed Bratislava alchemists attempting to make gold. According to legends, even Emperor Rudolf II visited their house. It is a historical fact that the famous physician and alchemist Theophrastus Paracelsus also stayed in Bratislava for a time. No traces of his stay have survived in the town, however.
