The Spirits’ Chant

The Franciscan church and monastery are among the town’s oldest monuments. Ferdinand I was crowned King of Hungary here in 1526. Beneath the church lie crypts of distinguished citizens and Franciscan friars. On Christmas Eve, around eleven at night, the crypt fills with light and a magnificent Franciscan chant honours the infant Jesus. At the stroke of twelve, the light goes out by itself and the singing falls silent; only then does the solemn Midnight Mass begin.
