Mining once took place around Nová Paka. B. Balbín states that a Marian statue famous for miracles was kept in the chapel above town and later in the church. An old legend says it was found in the mines themselves. Pilgrimages were made to it. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin has an interesting illusionistic altar and a Baroque St Christopher painting. The town is known for a treasury of local semiprecious stones: agates, amethysts, jaspers and fossils.
