North of Letiny, near Kožich hill above Libákovice, lie picturesque scattered chert rocks called the Devil’s Burden (550 m). Legend says a hermit, perhaps St Gunther, once lived on the site of the present Letiny spa. Devils discovered him and tormented him in every possible way. The hermit therefore stipulated that if the fiends built him a chapel in one night, he would become their servant. The devils were dragging an enormous rock from Plzeň when a fire broke out in nearby Libákovice. The frightened roosters began to crow, making the devils think dawn was breaking. They dropped the heavy load from their backs onto the ground. Ever since, the broken rock has been called the Devil’s Burden.
