Three devils once lived on Ještěd. The Devil's Wall was built as the result of a wager between a wandering horseman and the devil: the devil had to build as fast as the rider galloped. The wall still follows a low ridge near Vesec and farther on is called Měděnec. Its continuation becomes indistinct until it emerges again by the road from Osečná to Český Dub as Kotelský vrch. Near Budíkov it formed the Devil's Gate, with rock slabs resting on massive basalt pillars, sadly now destroyed. The wall continues towards Studýnky, Dolánky and Těšnov, where it forms a pond dam. Near Olšina it disappears underground. Because weathered basalt lies there, the vegetation is lusher than on the surrounding sandy land. Near Kuřívody the Devil's Wall rises again and runs through deep forests to the foot of Bezděz. (See Bezděz, Český Dub.)
