Chrudim is one of the few towns in the Czech lands whose demonological legends were recorded in detail. This is thanks to the local-born Alois Gallat and his slim book Chrudim in the Age of Magic and Ghosts, published in 1889. In one passage he relates: ‘In 1699 Mandalena Korbářová lost her geese beyond the New Town. Foolishly and lightly she wished the devil upon whoever had taken them. Then she herself was found possessed, for the evil spirit forced her mouth into a grimace, twisted her head backwards and made her scream terribly. The village sorcerer from Rabštýnek, immediately summoned, soon helped. Placing a peeled willow wand on Korbářová's head, he spoke a few incomprehensible words. The devil then flew out through her mouth, gave a dreadful roar and vanished. Many trustworthy people testified to this event.’
