Devils supposedly once settled in the tower by the third castle gate and made a racket whenever a priest was to celebrate a service in the castle chapel. They changed into various animals, appeared on the tower’s battlements and frightened the garrison. Sometimes they took the form of black cockerels, at other times the shape of goats. No one could supposedly drive them away. The lower of the two Bezděz hills is also called the Devil’s Hill, and the tower on the higher hill is known as the Devil’s Tower. The former castle chapel was dedicated to St Michael as the victor over the devil. A great treasure is said to be hidden in the Devil’s Tower, guarded by the devil; many people have already tried to retrieve it.
