Bezděz - Hrad · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

A Place of Pilgrimage

In 1666, a copy of the Black Madonna of Montserrat was ceremonially brought here, and from then on Bezděz became the destination of great pilgrimages. Stations of the Cross chapels were built along the path to the castle. The castle made a deep impression on K. H. Mácha, particularly during his walk to the Krkonoše Mountains. His work Evening at Bezděz is a direct response to his visit.
