According to legend, the hills arose from a wager lost by the devil of Ještěd to a wandering rider. The devil had to build a wall as quickly as the rider galloped on horseback. Near Bezděz a cockerel crowed; the devil failed to finish in time and lost the bet. He heaped the remaining stones into the two hills. A bank, still clearly visible, links Bezděz to Ještěd, and local people call it the Devil’s Wall. See also Doksy.
