Bezděkov · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

Spiess’s Rock

From 1750, the local château belonged to the Künigl family. The well-known German author of Gothic and robber novels Christian Heinrich Spiess (1755–1799) stayed here at that time. His sudden death, almost simultaneous with that of Countess Künigl, gave rise to many romantic speculations. In the nearby woods is a formation known as Spiess’s Rock, said in local legends to be haunted.
