The castle lord Bedřich of Bibrštejn supposedly once lost his soul to the devil at dice. In return, the devil ploughed the rock beneath the castle with magical black horses. On stormy nights the ghost of the castle lady appears beneath the furrowed rock, lamenting. When the lord was buried in a pewter coffin in the family tomb at Frýdlant Church, its bearers said it was unusually light. They concluded that the devil had carried his body to hell. The steep, column-fractured rock can still be seen from the courtyard between the lower and upper castle as a trace of the devil’s ploughing.
