Below U svatých Cemetery, in the former Lower Suburb, people pointed out Skalník’s Hole, supposedly a rock sprite’s lair. Every night he rode a burning broom from here to a witch in Havlovice who was allied with the devil. He had another lair on Škarman hill at Domažlice’s northeastern edge, where gold and silver mining once began. The miners left only a cave with water covering its floor. A mighty rock pillar divides its mouth into two entrances. This cave too is called Skalník’s Hole. The spirit is supposedly kind to the poor but hostile to anyone who grew rich by fraud. He could be seen here on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
