People in Dačice long said that several houses on Horní Square were haunted. Before midnight, the ground opened in front of the old school and the ghost of a large black man emerged from a grave. Each time he took off his black clothes, put on brown ones and strode quickly towards Horní Square. A legend tells of the fearless tower keeper Papež, who once hid the burial clothes in his tower. When the ghost attacked him, he quickly rang midnight. At that instant the apparition crumbled to dust. The tower keeper had freed the ghost from its spell, and the hauntings ceased.
