A castle legend concerns the Polish nobleman Zikmund Laski, who stopped here on his way to the campaign against the Turks in 1683. He fell in love with a local girl and, on returning from battle, wanted to take her to Poland. But on St Stanislaus’s Day, a Polish national feast, a strange curse turned him into a wolf, and in that form he was shot in the nearby woods. An ancestor had supposedly taken part in the murder of Stanislaus, Bishop of Kraków. On the anniversary of his death, all male descendants of the family turned into wolves and rampaged through the forests. Only Zikmund’s death lifted the curse from the family.
