White Lady

Illustration for White Lady
Colour illustration in the style of a nineteenth-century drawing

According to the book, the White Lady appeared mainly at night in a long, light-coloured robe. In the Rožmberk tradition, her appearance and the colour of her gloves could announce a happy event or a death. Legends connect her especially with Perchta of Rožmberk, but similar White Ladies appear at many castles, châteaux, towns, springs and chapels.

Where it appears

Dozens of places in Bohemia and Moravia, especially Rožmberk residences and other aristocratic seats.

What the old legends say

The White Lady is not always hostile in legends. People were therefore advised above all to remain calm, not try to touch her and not mock her. In religious tales, a person protected themselves with prayer or the sign of the cross and preferred to leave the place quietly.
