The book describes the Wild Hunt as a noisy host of spectres led by the Wild Huntsman. Darkness, storms, pounding hooves, horn calls and a pack of dogs accompany it. Tradition warns that someone caught in the forest may be attacked, carried away or otherwise seriously harmed; lying with one's head towards the ground or remaining inside a magic circle was supposed to offer protection.
Where it appears
Mainly the wooded border regions of Bohemia, and in places Moravia.
What the old legends say
The book gives two classic defences: lie down with the head as close to the ground as possible, or stay inside a protective circle. One should neither call to the Hunt, join it nor stand in its path. Hiding and waiting for the ghostly procession to disappear was considered safest.
