What frightens us most about a ghost is often that it behaves unlike the living. The Bechyně legend reverses the rules. Its White Lady slips so quietly among people that someone even lights a candle from hers. No flight, no scream. Just a small flame moving through a castle corridor and a figure who, according to the old tale, has no place there.
A silent warning for the nurse
The atlas source recalls an account by J. Beckovský in Poselkyně starých příběhů českých. The story connects Bechyně Castle with the childhood of Petr Vok of Rožmberk and the family apparition familiar from other Rožmberk residences. It should be read as a surviving legend, not as evidence of an encounter with a ghost.
In the tale, the White Lady takes the child from its nurse and carries it elsewhere. Then she brings it back, unharmed and without disaster. The strange action is meant as a reminder: the child needs attentive care. This ghost does not oppose the family. Rather, she watches over its life in a way that could hardly leave a living person at ease.
A visitor who says nothing
Another scene is quieter still. The lady joins the maids in their room and sits with them for hours. She says nothing. The legend need not explain her thoughts or invent a secret task for her. Its unease lies in how ordinary it all seems: there is someone extra in the room, people can see her, yet no normal conversation begins.
In the evening she walks through the castle carrying a burning candle. The account says that guests unfamiliar with the household, as well as inattentive residents, approach to light their own candles from her flame. The boundary between an ordinary service and an encounter with the dead becomes surprisingly thin. All it takes is an outstretched hand holding a wick.
Weariness that seems out of place in a ghost
Sometimes, they say, she sits in an armchair, breathes heavily and sighs about the long journey behind her. The White Lady of Bechyně is given not only an appearance but also human weariness. The legend never explains where she has come from. That unspoken answer holds the story together. She leaves behind a light, concern for a child and the impression of someone obliged to keep walking, although she would dearly like to rest.
