The capital of Great Moravia and the seat of the archbishop and Slavic missionary Methodius, who died in 885, once stood here. A white horse was consecrated to the pagan god Svantovít. The priests had to wash and groom it every morning, since people believed that each night the god rode it on a distant journey to fight his enemies. The horse was kept at nearby Svatov farm, now Nedakonice. St Methodius once met a woman going to make an offering to Svantovít's sacred horse. He supposedly said, 'The horse will give no more!'—'Nedá kůň víc!' in Czech. This allegedly gave the village its new name, and its inhabitants embraced Christianity.
