The village, a well-known pilgrimage site, has an old statuette of the Virgin and Child in its church. The Child once wore a little crown, supposedly the famous serpent’s crown of legend. Its acquisition is told in a version also known elsewhere: anyone seeking the serpent king’s or queen’s crown first had to discover where it bathed. They then spread a spotless white cloth there for the serpent to lay its crown upon. Once it entered the water, the cloth and crown had to be gathered up quickly and carried away as fast as possible. A local boy supposedly undertook this adventure and gave his captured crown to the holy statuette.
