Budeč · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

Krok’s Castle

According to Hájek of Libočany, Duke Krok founded his castle and town here in 678. His three daughters embody the full range of pagan magical practices. The eldest, Kaša or Kazi, called Casi by Cosmas, hence Kazín, represented the psychurgic branch, the division of lower magic. She was skilled in spells and witchcraft. The middle daughter, Teta or Tetka, see Tetín, symbolised the theurgic branch, or higher magic, based on communication with a deity. She supposedly introduced the invocation of gods and their ritual. The youngest, Libuše, Cosmas’s Lubossa, hence Libušín, represented the union and culmination of the magical triad. She is described as the most learned, skilled in divination and spagyrics, the preparation of medicinal mixtures of plant and mineral origin. Budeč was also the first centre of learning in pagan Bohemia, attended by Libuše as well.
