Slavkov U Brna · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The sun of Austerlitz

On the night of 1 December 1805, before the famous battle, the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have had a prophetic dream of a blazing red sun, with which he associated his hopes of victory. The next day a red sun really did rise out of the morning mist above Slavkov. The emperor ascribed an almost mystical significance to the phenomenon, linked it with his victory and returned to it many times in later years.
