Sixteen fexts once stood in the ossuary here. One of them had been a huntsman during the Thirty Years’ War. According to legend, he magically immobilised several Swedish mercenaries in the Sebranice tavern. A local daredevil wanted to obtain the thumb of the fext’s right hand, which superstition held would bring good fortune. Just as he was about to cut it off, the fext jumped onto his back and gripped him tightly. The unfortunate man carried his dreadful burden to the rectory, where the chaplain tried in vain to exorcise it. Finally he advised him to return to the ossuary, and only there did the fext let go. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, three male and two female corpses were exhumed from the local cemetery. Their bodies were hard and ashen, with the hair on their heads and their clothing fairly well preserved. The discovery prompted fresh speculation about fexts.
