Roudnice Château, originally an episcopal palace with elements of French keeps, has a rich past and its secrets. Like Prague Castle, it was a home of alchemy in at least two widely separated periods. The Prague archbishops Albík of Uničov (1412–1413) and Konrád of Vechta (1413–1431), both enthusiastic devotees of Hermetic science, stayed and perhaps also experimented here. Alchemy flourished again under Vilém of Rosenberg, who acquired the Roudnice estate in 1577. Following the model of his South Bohemian laboratories, he established an alchemical workshop here. Among the foreigners working in it was Claudius Syrrus, summoned from England by Vilém. Under the later Roudnice Lobkowicz owners, a vast library of 100,000 volumes and a unique picture gallery were assembled here.
