Despite historical accounts that Charles IV founded the castle around 1356, legends persistently credit its foundation to Long-Eared Radouš. Hájek of Libočany introduced him into literature, though his source is unknown. He was supposedly Hrozislav’s son from the village of Radouš, who set out west with his people seeking a place for a new settlement. He was an ugly nobleman despised by everyone, with long donkey’s ears and boar’s teeth. He killed six wives and their children, who resembled him. His seventh wife fled with her child. His ghost appears at Radyně and at high noon pushes a wheelbarrow full of axle grease. Each appearance supposedly brings a violent storm. His treasures remain hidden in the castle, guarded by him and a black dog. (See Radouš in Part I.)
