The Devil at Emmaus

In ancient times, a pagan grove where sacrifices were made to the goddess Morana stood on the site of the Na Slovanech, or Emmaus, Monastery. The locality’s name Na Moráni supposedly comes from this. The monks were once tempted by the Devil, who had slipped into the monastery in the guise of a cook. It took a long time before he was exposed and banished with the formula “Apage, Satanas!” Variations of this legend are widespread at many former monastic sites. (See Žatec.)
