The Daliborka Tower at Prague Castle is famously named after the knight Dalibor of Kozojedy, imprisoned here for inciting a peasant revolt in the Litoměřice region. People said, “Necessity taught him to play the fiddle,” and supposedly all Prague came to listen. He was executed in 1498. It is possible that the mournful music was actually the screams of Dalibor being tortured on the rack, nicknamed the fiddle in executioners’ jargon.
