The Black Fiery Dog of Hradčany

Beside the old town hall opposite the Tuscan Palace, a ghostly black, fiery dog appears at night between eleven and midnight, accompanying passers-by. It is seen from the rise near the Barnabite monastery as far as the Loreto, where it disappears beside the statue of St Barbara. The original Barnabite monastery at 184-IV Hradčany Square later sheltered the Discalced Carmelite nuns, who lived in the strictest enclosure. Allegedly, before taking her vows, each novice had to remove a ring at midnight from the raised blessing hand of the fearsome mummy of Blessed Electa. During services, Prague residents heard the psalm singing of these girls buried alive as voices rising from an abyss.
