Baron Trenck’s Ghost at Špilberk

According to some legends, the Knights Templar once lived at Špilberk Castle and maintained a monastery there. The castle was later converted into a prison fortress. Among its famous inmates was the notorious Pandur commander Baron Trenck, who also died here. He was buried in the Capuchin church, wearing a habit and with shackles and chains on his hands, supposedly at his own request. People say that he found no peace in his grave, and many saw his shuffling ghost in the corridor outside his cell. The apparition supposedly appeared for many years. Every year on All Saints’ Day, the ghost of a pale woman appears at night by his grave in the Capuchin church. She kneels there praying until dawn, then vanishes.
