Brekov - Hrad · STORY FROM THE ATLAS

The Lord Enchanted into a Horse

Above the village of the same name in Zemplín stand the remains of a thirteenth-century castle destroyed by an earthquake in 1778. Unexplored stalactite caves remain within the castle hill. The ghost of a black horse supposedly appears among the ruins. According to legend, a local peasant once cursed the lord, Fero Balkóczy, to become after death the same kind of horse that the lord had stolen from him. When an earthquake destroyed the castle and its lord died beneath the rubble, the curse came true.
