The pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary preserves the so-called Palladium, an early-fifteenth-century metal relief of the Virgin and Child known as Our Lady of Stará Boleslav. It is said that a farmer once ploughed it up in a field. This event is also the most common subject of pilgrimage pictures. Great pilgrimages came to the church. According to legend, St Ludmila had the relief cast from the metal of broken and destroyed pagan idols; St Wenceslas received it as a gift and always carried it with him.
