Between Stará Boleslav and Brandýs, in a remnant of the old Elbe channel, the ringing of sunken bells can be heard on dark nights amid the roar of the Brandýs weir. They were supposedly once borrowed from Klecany for the solemn consecration of St Wenceslas’s Church. People had forgotten, however, that the bells flew back to their original home every night. A godless coachman once crossed the bridge at that hour. When he uttered a dreadful curse, the bells fell into a deep pool, where they are said to rest to this day.
