Tradition says a learned rabbi once saved the local synagogue from fire by his magical power. It is now a Czech Brethren prayer house. As the fire spreading through Nový Bydžov almost reached it, he raised his hand. A pair of doves flew in and settled on the sanctuary roof, and the fire immediately turned away. His prophecy that the synagogue would never burn came true, even while the whole surrounding ghetto burned down.
