Pilgrimage Sites on Chlum

Southeast of town lies wooded Chlum hill, with a Slavic hillfort called Švédské šance, the Swedish Earthworks. The spring flowing beneath a chapel on its slope is called God’s Water and is said to be healing. From the 18th to the early 20th century it was a popular pilgrimage site. Midway up the hillside near Jemníky is a spring in a hollow where the ghost of a black fiery dog appears. The village name recalls jamníci, a derogatory name for Czech Picards because they gathered in holes.
